After the Family Medicine Match and Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) concluded last week, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) announced that the national match performance broke records. “We are celebrating our biggest family medicine class based on the number of positions offered and the highest number of positions filled in the Main Match,” AAFP Vice President for National Residency and Academic Partnerships Dr. Karen Mitchell said. “By the end of Match Week and the conclusion of the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program, we anticipate that we will have our biggest class ever.”
The AAFP included two record-setting stats from last week’s Match: the 5,512 positions offered in the National Resident Matching Program and the 4,613 medical graduates who filled them. Since that second number came before the SOAP process ended, the AAFP expects the newest class of Family Medicine residents to top last year’s final count of 5,327 matches. “Congratulations to all those filling Family Medicine positions today,” Dr. Mitchell said.
In North Carolina, the residency programs achieved a higher fill rate than the national average prior to the SOAP process and ended up 100% filled after the SOAP process. In addition, the number of medical students entering family medicine from NC medical schools increased this year, as well as the number of graduates staying in state for residency.
