Last week, Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIGs) at all five current North Carolina medical schools received awards from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)! These programs received different Program of Excellence awards this year:

  • The Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine received the 2026 AAFP Program of Excellence Award for Professional Development.
  • The Duke University School of Medicine FMIG received a 2026 AAFP Program of Excellence Award.
  • The East Carolina University (ECU) Brody School of Medicine FMIG received the 2026 AAFP Program of Excellence Award for Exposure to Family Medicine. In addition, ECU FMIG Advisor Dr. Jessica Zimmerman received the 2026 AAFP Joyce Jeardeau Memorial Award for her exemplary support of the FMIG.
  • The University of North Carolina School of Medicine FMIG received the 2026 AAFP Program of Excellence “Rising Star” Award.
  • The Wake Forest University School of Medicine FMIG received the 2026 AAFP Program of Excellence Award for Promoting the Scope and Diversity of Family Medicine.

These Program of Excellence Awards recognize FMIG groups that “encourage student interest in the family medicine specialty,” according to the AAFP. The NCAFP works closely with these FMIGs to help medical students explore Family Medicine, and so we can attest that their efforts are exceptional and effective. These FMIGs will receive their awards and recognition during the FUTURE Conference later this summer.

Congratulations to these FMIGs and to the many NCAFP members who make them happen as leaders, faculty advisors, and members!
