Medical Students: Apply to Participate in NCAFP Summer Programs by Feb. 28!

Interested North Carolina medical students who are between their first and second years in medical school (or Duke students between third and fourth year) can now apply to participate in the 2026 NCAFP summer programs! Both the two-week immersion programs and four-week externships provide students with valuable experiences away from the academic setting. Students will participate in patient visits, rural health discussions, wilderness medicine sessions, hands-on skills workshops, visits to a rural hospital, and other clinical experiences with direct mentorship and guidance from practicing family physicians.

These programs are some of the most anticipated experiences for medical students in North Carolina. Here’s what past participants have said:

  • “I have loved the physicians I spent time with the past two weeks. Thanks to our physician hosts and the networking opportunities we’ve had, I learned a LOT about what life is like both in the clinic and out for a rural physician.”
  • “This experience provided very practical, hands-on learning that helped me ‘connect-the-dots' between classroom learning and on-the-ground experience.”
  • “My 4-week externship experience cemented my desire to become a family medicine physician. I got to actively participate in the care my preceptor was providing in both his clinical office as well as in at-home visits with patients, and that hands-on exposure gave me hope for what I could do as a family provider in the future.”
