Family Medicine Scholarship Program

The North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians Foundation provides scholarships up to $5,000.00 to North Carolina medical students considering careers as family physicians. Medical students that will be in their 3rd or 4th year of medical school effective 8/1/2016 are eligible to apply. All applications are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee. Approval is based on sincere interest in the specialty of family medicine with consideration given to financial need.

Applications for scholarship disbursement for the 2016-2017 school year must be postmarked, faxed or e-mailed by 11:59pm Monday, May 1, 2017. No exceptions will be made.

How It Works

Once the scholarship is approved, a Scholarship Agreement is signed and returned to the NCAFP Foundation by the medical student. A check is then mailed to the student for the scholarship amount.Scholarships to recipients who do not complete a family medicine residency training program transition into a loan and become due when the student has completed all formal medical training (this includes residency). Payback is made in three annual installments, plus accrued interest. The initial interest rate is 10.3% per annum. However, if the recipient fails to commence payback when due, the interest rate will increase by 1% each year until payment is received in full.

Written verification is required at the time of medical school graduation and upon completion of your residency training.

If you are a former scholarship recipient or have applied before, we encourage you to apply again. Due date for applications is May 1st, applications postmarked or received after 11:59pm on this date will not be considered. Scholarship recipients will be notified in August 2017.
