Acting CMS Administrator Suggests MACRA Start Delay

Acting CMS Administrator Suggests MACRA Start Delay

July 27, 2016

Sharing comments before the US Senate Finance Committee this week, CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt told lawmakers that the CMS is considering delaying the start date for Medicare payment reform.

Slavitt commented that the CMS is concerned that some physicians, particularly at small practices, may not be ready for the changes under MACRA.

The AAFP recently expressed a series of concerns about MACRA in a letter to CMS, and has joined several national medical organizations in encouraging delay. In addition to alternative start dates, Slavitt highlighted the possibility of shorter reporting periods or allowing doctors to get experience with the new methods before the "impact really hits them."
