New Hanover Family Docs Spring into Action as Part of Florence Recovery

Family Medicine residents and former graduates with the New Hanover Regional Residency in Family Medicine wasted no time in extending a helping hand to those in need immediately after Hurricane Florence. While providing on-the-ground support in Burgaw, NC, New Hanover’s exceptional crew helped make a major difference. In a quick span, they delivered a baby, accompanied an unstable patient by helicopter; rounded and treated patients sheltering at Pender High School, coordinated supplies for a patient needing an urgent paracentesis (and then performed it!), treated unstable patients with chronic diseases who had run out of their medications and even delivered toys and stickers to kids!

Hat’s off to all New Hanover past and present residents for the major effort and a special thanks to Dr. Heather Davis of Pender Memorial Hospital for the stellar organizational efforts. This is a fantastic example of family docs making a GIGANTIC difference when the community stakes were the highest.
