New Medicare Cards Will Begin Rolling Out This April

A federally-mandated change to Medicare’s identification cards is scheduled to begin nationwide on April 1st. CMS will begin mailing new cards to all Medicare beneficiaries based on geographic location. For Medicare patients in North Carolina, new cards should begin arriving around June. CMS is replacing the current SSN-based Medicare ID Number (Heath Insurance Claim Number or HICN) with a unique 11-character identifier called the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier or MBI. By January 1st of 2020, all Medicare claims will require MBIs. CMS has published an overview of coming changes for physicians and practices and is advising practices to, ‘make and internally test changes to your practice management systems and business processes by April 2018 before we mail new Medicare cards.’
