Community Care of North Carolina announced a new program Monday that will expand its network of medical homes previously reserved for Medicaid and Medicare recipients to private sector and state employees through a public-private partnership with the State Health Plan, GlaxoSmithKline, Kerr Drug, SAS and Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC. As an example of the medical home expansion that will occur, GSK will waive copayments for primary care doctor visits for employees choosing this option and pay participating doctors a “per member, per month” fee for each GSK employee assigned to a CCNC medical home. Kerr Drug will begin offering employees access to medical homes in the company’s 2013 benefits year, and the state will begin offering employees access to CCNC medical homes in targeted counties in the fall of 2011. The State Health Plan will offer the option to 400,000 enrollees in all 100 counties within two years of launch through a cooperative agreement with Active Health Management. The Raleigh News & Observer, as well as several other news organizations, ran coverage on the announcement earlier this week at the N.C. Institute of Medicine’s Annual meeting in Raleigh.
