The NCAFP's Family Medicine Externship Program is a four-week summer clerkship that exposes rising second-year medical students to the daily activities of family physicians. It gives the student a better understanding of the role that the family doctor plays in his or her community. Students who serve in externships are given the opportunity to visit hospitals, nursing homes, continuing medical seminars, and physician's practices.
After completion of the four-week externship, the student receives a stipend of $1000. This program is funded and sponsored by hospitals across North Carolina. Housing and travel arrangements are the responsibility of the student.
Since its inception in 1992, over 300 medical students have been placed with a family physician in North Carolina. This continues to be a very effective program for students interested in family medicine. Comments from previous participants indicate how valuable the program is:
If you are interested in applying for the program, please see your FMIG faculty advisor or student leader for an application.
* Application submission deadline is March 17, 2008. Students will be notified in April/May of their status.
The goal of this program is to increase a student's knowledge of organized medicine and its role in medical education, including programs designed specifically for medical students and residents. Participating students will conduct this four-week program at NCAFP headquarters in Raleigh and complete a special project of their own design once approved by their preceptor/sponsor.
Student funding for this program is available for all NC medical students from the James Seaborn Blair, MD Family Medicine Leadership Fellows Fund at East Carolina University .
Each North Carolina medical school offers programs to medical students interested in the practice of family medicine. While many programs are limited to students of each particular school, some specific programs are offered to medical students at-large.
