Improving Treatment for Substance Abuse Disorders

This dinner program will encourage participants to discuss the changing nature of substance abuse treatment and the role of primary care physicians in an integrated treatment system. Various initiatives related to comprehensive medical practice including referral rates, SBIRT, PRISM (Program of Research to Integrate Substance use Information into Mainstream Healthcare) and addiction medications will also be explored. The keynote speaker will address the next steps with attention to product attractiveness, product diversification, financing and practice integration.

Finally, participants will ultimately understand brief interventions for substance abuse that can be utilized in the Primary Care Setting.

The Governor’s Institute on Alcohol & Substance Abuse is an independent, non-governmental and nonprofit organization. The Governor’s Institute is able to develop partnerships between various organizations and supports linkages among educational programs, professional organizations, tertiary care facilities, clinics and hospitals, treatment facilities, consumer groups and the substance abuse field by participating in coalitions and state planning efforts. As a neutral coordinator of resources, it serves as a clearinghouse to bring more research findings into clinics and other treatment settings and more information about treatment effectiveness into the classroom.

The ICARE Partnership is a collaborative initiative seeking to increase access to quality, evidence-based behavioral health care services for North Carolinians. Our aspiration is embodied in our name – we are partners in creating a healthcare system that is Integrated, Collaborative, Accessible, Respectful, and Evidence-Based.

Target Audience: Family Physicians, Pediatricians, Psychiatrists and other interested health care professionals.

Continuing Education Credit: - Application for CME credit has been filed with the Ameican Academy of Family Physicians. Approval is pending for 1.5 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the AMA as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Many of the state licensing boards will accept AAFP Prescribed credit from members to meet CME requirements. AAFP recommends participants contact their association to see if they will accept AAFP Prescribed Credit.

Keynote Speaker: A. Thomas McLellan, PhD, is a psychologist, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Treatment Research Institute. The Treatment Research Institute is a not-for-profit research and development organization dedicated to reducing the devastating effects of alcohol and other drug abuse on individuals, families and communities by employing scientific methods and disseminating evidence-based information. He is best known for his leading role in creation of the Addiction Severity Index and the Treatment Services Review, two of the most widely used instruments in the field of substance abuse. Among McLellan’s many honors and awards are the Life Achievement Award of the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2003 and the 2002 award for Distinguished Contribution in Addiction Medicine from the Swedish Medical Association.
