Foundation Officers

The Academy Foundation is led by a Board of Trustees, made up of elected volunteers from many disciplines. The Foundation is committed to advancing primary health care throughout North Carolina by supporting the specialty of Family Medicine.

Dr. Maureen E. Murphy

Maureen E. Murphy, MD

President

Dr. Murphy graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1985, then moved to North Carolina to do her residency at Duke-Watts Family Medicine Residency program in 1988. Upon completion, she taught for two years in the Department of Family Medicine at ECU in Greenville. She then relocated to Gastonia, where she was in private practice for 12 years. She now practices in Sparta at Alleghany Family Practice, working at a critical access hospital. Dr. Murphy has served in several positions in the NCAFP, including President in 2001.

Dr. Margaret Gradison

Margaret Gradison, MD

Vice President

Dr. Gradison graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1981, and did her residency at the University of Colorado Family Practice from 1981-1984. She is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Gradison has been Chief of the Division of Family Medicine since 2002, and was residency program director from 1998-2004. She was Education Director for Duke University Affiliated Physicians, a group of community primary care physicians in Duke-owned private practices, from 1994-1998. She has been involved in teaching medical students, residents, and faculty development workshops. Dr. Gradison was in private practice in Colorado for nine years, many of those in a rural area of the state, and was Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado, Department of Family Medicine. Before coming to Duke, Dr. Gradison was Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and Associate Residency Director in 1993-1994. Her special interests include women's health care and adolescent medicine.

Dr. Edward S. Campbell

Edward S. Campbell, MD

Secretary/Treasurer

Dr. Campbell is a Cum Laude graduate of Tusculum College. He graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine and did his internship and residency at Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He practices at Lake Norman Family Medicine, part of Piedmont Health Care, in Mooresville, NC. Dr. Campbell serves on the center's Credentials Committee. He is currently a member of the Board for the Mooresville-South Iredell Free Clinic. Dr. Campbell is a Past President of the NC Academy of Family Physicians. He is also the current NC Tar Wars Coordinator. Dr. Campbell was a member of the CME Committee from 1989-1994, and served as chair of the committee in 1994. He has been a member of the NCAFP Board since 1996.

Sue L. Makey, CAE

Sue L. Makey, CAE

Executive Vice President

Ms. Makey has been on staff with NCAFP since 1976. She serves on the Legal and Policy Committee and the Non-Dues Generating Committee for the Medical Society Technology eCooperative. Ms. Makey is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) where she has served on the Finance and Administrative Council, the Association Evaluation Committee, and the Awards Committee. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Association Executives of North Carolina (AENC) and currently serves as president- elect. Ms. Makey was the recipient of the AENC Oustanding CEO of the Year Award for the year 2000. She is a member of the American Association of Medical Society Executives and serves as a consultant on the NCMS Coordinating Council of Specialty Societies.
