Although the U.S. Senate passed a bill rescinding a 21.3 percent payment cut in the Medicare payment rate on June 18, the House has yet to act on the measure, allowing the cut to remain in effect and creating a complicated payment situation for physicians.

The Obama administration has officially unveiled a series of investments to expand the nation's primary care workforce, including measures to train more than 500 new primary care physicians by 2015. The initiative, which is funded by the recently enacted health care reform law, provides $250 million to increase the nation's supply of primary care providers; $168 million will go toward creating more residency slots to train more than 500 new primary care physicians during the next five years, according to an HHS press release.

CMS has notified its Medicare contractors that they should continue to hold physician claims for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries through June 17 as Congress continues to work on a solution to the 21.3 percent cut in the Medicare payment rate that took effect June 1.
