NCAFP Board of Directors

Each year, the Academy elects a new Board of Directors, comprised of family physicians from across North Carolina. All board directors and officers originate from each of seven (7) districts. The current NCAFP Academy officers, directors and delegates are listed below.

2005-06 NCAFP Executive Officers
Dr. J. Carson Rounds

J. Carson Rounds, MD

President

The President acts as a spokesperson for the Academy. The President also presides at all meetings of the Executive Committee and the membership. He or she shall preside at meetings of the Board of Directors in the absence of the Board Chair/Immediate Past President.

Dr. Rounds graduated from the East Carolina University School of Medicine and completed his residency training at Carolinas Medical Center. He completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and a Family Practice-Obstetrics Fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Rounds served as President of the ECU chapter of the AMA Medical Student Section and the Medical Student Council. He also acted as the Site Coordinator for the ECU Rural Family Practice Residency at Clinton Medical Clinic. Dr. Rounds is currently in private practice in Wake Forest, NC.

Dr. Michelle F. Jones

Michelle F. Jones, MD

President-Elect

The President-Elect's most important function is to be able to assume the presidency due to total disability, resignation, or death of the President. He or she shall preside at meetings of the membership in the absence of the Board Chair, President and Vice President.

Dr. Jones is in her seventh year of private practice with Wilmington Health Associates, a multi-specialty group in Wilmington, NC. She currently serves as Chair of the Division of Family Medicine at New Hanover Health Network. Dr. Jones completed her medical education at East Carolina University and her residency training at Duke University. She has been an active member of the NCAFP since medical school, serving as Student Director on the NCAFP Board in 1993. At the national level, Dr. Jones has been a member of the AAFP Committee on Quality and Scope of Practice and the Committee on Scientific Program. Her special interests include increasing reimbursement for family physicians, and improving student interest in family medicine.

Dr. Christopher S. Snyder

Christopher Snyder, III, MD

Vice President

The Vice President presides at meetings of the Executive Committee and membership in the absence of the President. He or she shall preside at meetings of the membership in the absence of both the Board Chair/Immediate Past President and President. The Vice President's term of office primarily serves as a year of training prior to being elevated to President-Elect.

Dr. Snyder attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia for his undergraduate work and attended medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. His internship and residency were completed at Fairfax Family Practice Center in Falls Church, Virginia. Dr. Snyder practiced Family Medicine in Leesburg, Virginia for 12 years before joining Mt. Pleasant Family Physicians in 1991. In 1998, Dr. Snyder, who previously served as the clinic director for Concord Family Physicians, was named Associate Director for CME with Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program. His interests include professional well-being.

Dr. Elizabeth B. Gibbons

Secretary Treasurer

The Secretary-Treasurer serves as Secretary-Treasurer at all meetings of the membership and the Board of Directors. He or she shall be responsible for the maintaining of a strong financial program and for reporting all financial activity to the Board and membership.

Dr. Gibbons graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed her residency at the school in 1995. Except for her time spent training in Chapel Hill, Dr. Gibbons has resided in Wake County. She and her husband Dr. Gregory Gibbons, Ph.D., also a family physician, practice together at Gibbons Family Medicine in Cary. The Gibbons have three children, three dogs and a horse, and reside on a farm that has been the family's homestead for more than a century.

Dr. Karen L Smith

Karen L. Smith, MD

Board Chair

The Board Chair moderates/facilitates Board meetings. The Immediate Past President serves as the Board Chair for the Executive Committee. He or she will serve as the official representative if the President is unable to attend.

Dr. Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University. She traveled to Pennsylvania to attend Hahnemann University School of Medicine and returned to Duke University, where she completed her residency at the Duke FAHEC program in Fayetteville, NC. In 1990, she received the Duke University FAHEC Resident of the Year Award and currently participates in the teaching programs located at Duke University Medical Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has also served on the NCAFP Board of Directors as the Director of Minority Constituency. Married with four children, Dr. Smith operates a private solo practice in Raeford, NC, that has been highlighted nationally for its aggressive use of computerized EMR technology.

Sue L. Makey, CAE

Sue L. Makey, CAE

Executive Vice President

The Executive Vice President recommends and participates in the formulation of new policies and makes decisions in executing existing policies. Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the staff, programs and activities of the Academy to assure that objectives are attained and members' needs met. Maintains and fosters effective internal and external relationships.

Ms. Makey has been on staff with NCAFP since 1976 and is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), where she has served on the Finance and Administrative Council, the Association Evaluation Committee, and the Awards Committee. Ms. Makey is Past President of the Association Executives of North Carolina (AENC) and was the recipient of the AENC’s Outstanding CEO of The Year Award for the year 2000. She currently serves as a consultant on the NCMS Coordinating Council of Specialty Societies and also recently accepted a three-year appointment to serve on the AAFP Chapter Executives Advisory Task Force, an advisory group to Dr. Doug Henley, EVP of the AAFP. Sue is also currently serving on the TAC Committee of NC Prevention Partners.
